Dumpster Diving involves fraudsters looking for treasure in someone else’s trash. These could include access codes or even passwords scribbled down. Information like phone lists and calendar notes can also be used to gain access to your personal information.

It is also a technique used to retrieve or steal information from your computers, laptops, etc.

What can you do to avoid being a victim of Dumpster Diving?

  • Use a shredder to destroy unwanted documents with personal information.
  • Destroy all CDs with data that is not being used.
  • If you dispose of computers, take out the hard drives and use them for future backups instead.
