What is Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC)?

Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) also known as “Digital Rupee” or “e₹” is defined by RBI as a legal tender issued by a central bank in a digital form. It is the same as a sovereign currency and is exchangeable one-to-one at par (1:1) with existing currency. Digital rupee (e₹) will offer features of physical cash like trust, safety and settlement finality with atomicity (i.e. immediate settlement of transactions) in digital mode. Digital rupee (e₹) represents a direct claim on the central bank. It can be used to carry out transactions or store value digitally, similar to the manner in which currency notes are used in physical form.

How to Register for Digital Rupee (e₹) wallet?

  • Download Axis Bank Digital Rupee App using QR / Link given above.
  • Select the SIM (linked to your Axis Bank Saving Account).
  • Select login method (You can choose among PIN, Pattern or Biometric methods).
  • Set 6-digit wallet PIN.
  • Select Axis Bank Savings Account you wish to link to complete KYC.
  • Validate linked Axis Bank Savings Account using debit card details (last 6-digit number and expiry date).
  • Congratulations! You're all set to use Axis Bank Digital Rupee App

How to Load Digital Rupee (e₹)?

  • Download Axis Bank Digital Rupee App and complete registration.
  • Choose the "load" on home page and enter the desired amount or select from the available token denominations.
  • Select the loading method from the following options:
    • Linked Savings Bank Account
    • Other UPI Account
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the "Load"

How to Redeem Digital Rupee?

  • Login to Axis Mobile Digital Rupee App and select "redeem" on home page
  • Select the denominations of tokens to redeem or select "redeem all" to unload all available tokens in your wallet
  • Select the linked Axis Bank Savings Account that needs to be credited and enter wallet PIN.
  • Digital Rupee Tokens are unloaded from your wallet and the linked Axis Bank Savings account will be credited with corresponding amount.

How to Send money using Digital Rupee (e₹)?

  • Log-in to Axis Bank Digital Rupee App and choose "Send" option on home page.
  • You can choose phone number/ contact option for payment to your contacts
  • Alternately you can choose QR code or the QR code scan option from the home page to scan the Digital Rupee (e₹) QR code to pay other individuals/ merchants.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the "Send Transaction"

How to Send money using Digital Rupee (e₹)?

Now you can send digital rupee to individuals/merchants by scanning UPI QR.

  • Log-in to Axis Bank Digital Rupee App and choose "Send" option on home page. Alternatively you can choose QR code option from home page to scan any UPI QR.
  • Select denomination / enter amount and enter wallet PIN to authenticate transaction
  • Merchant/ Individual UPI linked Savings Account will be credited.

How to de-register Digital Rupee Wallet?

  • Log-in to Axis Bank Digital Rupee App and choose "Deregister wallet" under profile
  • Enter Wallet PIN to give consent for deregistration.
  • Digital Rupee present in wallet (if any) will automatically deposit to linked Axis Bank Savings Account.
  • Post successful redemption, deregistration will be completed.

How to use Auto load feature?

This features when turned On, will auto load the excess amount needed to the complete the transaction.

  • Log-in to your Axis Bank Digital Rupee App
  • Turn on the toggle switch for Auto load on Home screen
  • Read the terms and conditions for the feature and click on Submit

Please note: The maximum limit for Auto load is set at INR 2,000. When the excess amount exceeds the above threshold, you will have to load your wallet manually.

Digital Rupee (e₹) can be held in a wallet issued by banks and can be linked to your existing Bank Savings account. The wallet is a digital version of your physical wallet and Digital Rupee (e₹) can be deposited/ withdrawn to/from your existing bank Savings account into this wallet.

Digital Rupee (e₹) is a form of currency, a digital version of physical currency which one can use to make payments, whereas UPI or other fund transfer modes are only forms of payment. Digital Rupee (e₹) transactions occur between Digital rupee wallets and UPI QR codes, whereas UPI and other modes of payment like NEFT/RTGS/IMPS supports money transfer from Bank account to Bank account.

You can transact in Digital Rupee (e₹) through a convenient and safe digital wallet offered by Axis Bank. Digital Rupee (e₹) can be used to make payments to merchants and individuals, who also hold a Digital Rupee (e₹) wallet via mobile number or scanning Digital Rupee (e₹) QR codes. Digital Rupee wallet can hold maximum of 250 tokens/denominations (coins & notes) with the maximum amount of 1.25 lakhs. This limit has been defined by RBI for the Digital Rupee product across banks & will be updated from time to time. Additionally, in the event token/denomination count is exceeding the limit but the wallet balance is within limit, an automated change management will happen to accommodate the additional tokens/denominations.

So basically, a user can hold up to Rs. 1.25 Lakhs at any given point in the wallet.

You can transfer cumulative amount of 1 Lakh or total of 20 transactions in a day.

For a new customer, cooling period is applied for the first 24 hours after registration wherein cumulative transaction amount limit is 5 thousand and total transaction count is 10. Daily transaction limit of 1 lakh/20 transactions will be applicable after 24 hours. Cooling period will also be applicable for 24 hrs. in the event a customer re-registers after de-registration or changes pin on the App.

No. Transfers (Send money via mobile number, CBDC QR and UPI QR) to both individual and merchants are considered in the daily transaction limits.
You can transfer maximum of 25,000 (or 50 denominations/tokens) for each transaction.
You can do a maximum of 5 transactions (excluding load & redeem) per hour on the Axis Mobile Digital Rupee App. This limit is set to safeguard customers against potential fraudster activity as mandated by the RBI.
You can redeem a maximum of 50,000 (subjected to change basis NPCI).
No. You can only open and operate one wallet against your savings account on Axis Mobile digital rupee App.

  • Download Axis Bank Digital Rupee App and complete registration.
  • Choose the load option and enter the desired amount or select from the different denominations of Digital Rupee

  • The amount is debited from the Bank Account and Digital Rupee Tokens are loaded in the wallet successfully.

User can choose to redeem/unload Digital rupee to their Savings account.

  • Log-in to the Axis Bank Digital Rupee App and select redeem from home page.
  • Select the amount/ denominations of tokens to unload.
  • Select the Linked Axis bank Savings account that needs to be credited and enter wallet PIN.
  • Digital Rupee Tokens are unloaded from your wallet and the linked Axis Bank Savings account will be credited with corresponding amount.

Yes, Digital rupee can be closed/deregistered in case no longer required by user.

  • Log-in to Axis Bank Digital Rupee App and choose deregister wallet under profile section.
  • Enter Wallet Pin to confirm the consent for deregistration.
  • Digital Rupee present in wallet (if any) will automatically deposit to linked Axis Bank Savings account.
  • Post successful redemption, deregistration will be completed.

Mobile number and scanning of QR code are 2 ways in which you can send money from your Digital Rupee (e₹) wallet to other registered users with Digital Rupee (e₹) wallet/ users with valid UPI QR Code.

  • You can choose phone number/ contact option for payment to your contacts.
  • Alternately you can choose QR code or the QR code scan option from the home page to scan the Digital Rupee (e₹) QR code to pay other individuals/ merchants.

Yes. You can scan and Pay to any merchants/ individual’s QR code. Money shall be deducted from your axis digital rupee wallet and credited in the receiver’s UPI linked bank account.

  • Login to the Digital Rupee (e₹) app and click on settings >> PIN settings >> Forgot PIN
  • Enter last 6 digits of Axis debit card and the expiry date.
  • Enter and re-enter the new PIN.

No, there are no charges/fees associated with receiving or transferring Digital Rupee (e₹) or issuance of Digital Rupee (e₹) wallets. There is no minimum balance required to open/ maintain e₹ wallet.

No, as it is Digital form of currency note, there is no interest paid on digital currency in your Digital Rupee (e₹) wallet.
